When I started this piece for the exhibit "Beautiful Words" at Blockfort Columbus, I intended to embellish the Old Testament verse that Martin Luther King Jr. quoted most often, Amos 5:24, “But let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.” He quoted this verse in his well-known "Letter from Birmingham Jail" which I had never read! I started to read the letter and was swept up in his command of the language, his indictment on the White American church and his hope for the future of all citizens. The letter builds to the breathtaking final sentence: "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear drenched communities and in some not too distant future the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty."
