Gorkha Earthquake
In 2019 I traveled to Nepal to visit my son who was teaching English in Kathmandu. I was struck by the chilling visible remains of the 2015 earthquake that killed over 8,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless and displaced. Rubble is piled everywhere. All the buildings are cracked. Yet, the temple bells continue to sing in the wind, the people are going about their business, rebuilding the cities and villages brick by brick. This series of prints abstracts one ubiquitous architectural detail, broken apart, tumbled and displaced. This series of ten prints are collagraph monoprints, all printed from the same matrix. The way the plate is inked is the starting place for further embellishment.
